Advanced Scene Study
This ongoing class is designed for the professional, working actor.
In this class, we focus on a deeper understanding of text, and how to create a character from the building blocks of self. We will examine various points of view through questions and dialogue. This leads to increased flexibility in approach, and greater depth in performance.
Material will be recommended to students based upon Matthew’s assessment of their need to grow and explore in order to increase skill and range. Students are also free to select their own material, and students who are writer/performers are encouraged to bring in any work that they are developing on their own, to work on solo or with the group. Students are expected to be fully off-book when they are presenting work in class. Scene partners should have their scene fully prepared to the absolute best of their ability prior to bringing in to class.
Matthew’s technique draws heavily on his study with Uta Hagen, and the techniques and exercises described in her book, A Challenge for the Actor. Like Uta, he believes that the development of the characters we play is achieved through the exploration of aspects of our own character. He also incorporates the lessons learned in his fifty-plus years experience in film, television and on stage, with an emphasis on script analysis, the identification of the desires and goals of the character, and the shifting tactics and actions needed to fulfill and secure them.
Class is limited to 12 actors and is by referral, audition or invitation only.
Classes are held Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm.
Monthly tuition is $250.
